Post Partum Depression

Post Partum Depression can range anywhere from mild to severe, and if not treated, can result in major problems in a new family unit. There are several different treatments and ways that you can battle depression that can hit when you bring your bundle of joy home from the hospital.

When you come home from the hospital, you might not notice the depression immediately. It usually sets in within a few weeks, and can progress rapidly. One of the best things that you can do to battle Post Partum Depression is to exercise. Don't go to the gym and work out until you drop, but just walking or light cardio can help to keep you in shape and out of a severe depression. Exercise is good for you and your baby too, take baby with you on that walk around the block or at the park. Aside from exercise, making sure that you get the sleep that you need is key. Depression can set in faster and be worse if you are not sleeping properly. So, if you need a nap, take one. Lay down while the baby is sleeping, or hand the parental duties over to someone else for a bit. The housework will wait until you are ready. And do not worry about handing baby off to your spouse or other family members; there will be plenty ready to love on the baby while you get some zzz's!

If these two suggestions do not help, or aren't enough, start talking. Your spouse is a good place to start. Let him know how you are feeling and that you are concerned that Post Partum Depression is starting to creep in. Let him know that you are feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or how ever else you might be feeling. No matter if he can do anything but listen, it will help you to get it off your chest. Also, this is a good time to start talking to your doctor about depression. Let him or her know about your feelings and concerns and find out their suggestions to battle depression before it sets in too deep. They may suggest prescription depression medications, or herbal remedies depending on the doctor. Your doctor can also suggest any other treatments or ideas that you can try at home without prescription medications if you are concerned about the medications that are used for depression.

If you are experiencing problems with depression to the point that you are considering hurting someone or yourself, seek medical help immediately! There are several hotlines that you can call to talk to someone or you can go to your doctor or local emergency room if you feel the need to.

If you do notice that Post Partum Depression is starting to get a hold on you, do not wait to get help until it is out of control. Do not feel embarrassed or ashamed to talk to your spouse or family members, chances are they have been where you are. ..
